Welcome LetterCWLA's Western Region invites you to attend our 2008 Training Conference in Portland, Oregon, at the Hilton Hotel in the heart of Portland's financial and entertainment district. Our theme, "It Takes Courage and Compassion to Serve Children and Families," promises to provide you with a greater understanding of how to be a more effective caregiver, direct-service worker, advocate, or administrator serving America's at-risk children and families. The stresses, challenges, and complexities of providing high-quality, compassionate care are always present in your work. What skills, mindset, and perspective are necessary to prevent compassion fatigue and remain motivated and energized? This conference will present the latest research findings, novel approaches, and key skills needed to thrive as a professional in the child welfare field. To this end we hope to motivate human-service workers, managers, administrators, foster/adoptive parents, kinship caregivers, educators, advocates, community leaders, policymakers, lawyers, judges, court staff, mental health professionals, health advocates, volunteers, and public and private providers to rise to the challenge to develop innovative service-delivery systems and collaborate to put the needs of children and families first when designing new programs. Attending our general sessions, awards luncheon, closing brunch, and your choice of 46 different workshops and two super sessions will help you meet this very important goal. Please take a moment to read through the conference brochure. We hope you will agree that this will be your must-attend event of the year. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. We look forward to seeing you at the conference in September! Sincerely,
