February 20, 2009, Arlington, VA -- The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) has selected Robert F. Asarnow as the 2008-2009 recipient of the Dr. Alexander Gralnick Award. The Gralnick award is conferred every two years to recognize exemplary work in research, treatment or advocacy for children and adolescents with schizophrenia. Dr. Asarnow will receive the award and a cash prize of $10,000 at a ceremony to be held at CWLA's National Conference in Washington, DC on February 24th.

Dr. Asarnow is currently the Della Martin Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Professor of Psychology at the University of California- Los Angeles.. He has been involved in schizophrenia research for more than 30 years. His early work demonstrated that in children who develop schizophrenia, neurocognitive delays were frequently evident prior to the first onset of the illness.

Dr. Asarnow established the UCLA Child and Adolescent Schizophrenia Research Program more that 20 years ago to enhance early identification and diagnosis of schizophrenia in children and adolescents and to identify neural systems, and the genes which regulate the development of theses circuits.

"It gives us a great deal of pleasure to be able to recognize Dr. Asarnow for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to improving the well being of children and adolescents with schizophrenia," said Christine James-Brown, President and CEO of CWLA.

Since 1920, The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) has been the nation's pre-eminent membership-based organization dedicated to ensuring that disadvantaged and vulnerable children are protected from harm and have the tools and resources they need to grow into the healthy and happy adults we want them to become. CWLA is the trusted authority for professionals who work with children and the only national organization with public and private member agencies working across all sectors of the children's services field.
