February 24, 2009, Arlington, VA -- The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) is pleased to announce the United Way of Greater New Orleans as the 2009 recipient of its Champion for Children award. The award will be presented on February 24 at a leadership awards dinner at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. They were nominated for the award by Kingsley House of New Orleans.
United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area has been the premier leader in the recovery of the greater New Orleans area following the unprecedented destruction and devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. United Way serves the 6 parishes of Southeast Louisiana that were most severely impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, helping to amass resources, provide volunteers and deliver much needed financial assistance for social and human services focused on the well being of our area's most vulnerable children and families.
Each year CWLA presents an award to that individual who has made a difference in a child's life and/or who has dedicated their work to helping and encouraging children. Rather than muscles of steel, or the ability to leap over tall buildings in a single bound, most of the champions in life are individuals whose strength is their kindness-their compassion for the well-being of others. As CWLA sees it, a champion for children is also someone who encourages others to embrace every opportunity to be a champion.
As a result of the storms, Kingsley House suffered extensive damage to its campus. Even more prohibitive, was the state of our operational capacity. For several months
after the storm, virtually all of Kingsley House's federal, state and local funding sources were either frozen, suspended or terminated. Their operational support was reduced from $500,000 in monthly revenues to $50,000. And $45,000 of that $50,000 was coming from the United Way for the Greater New Orleans area.
Since the storms, United Way has raised and distributed over $40 million to over 90 partner agencies, directly impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of the community's most vulnerable children and families.
"Making a difference and helping others unselfishly without seeking accolades is the mark of a true champion and that is why CWLA selected the United Way of Greater New Orleans to receive this award," noted Christine James-Brown, President and CEO.
Since 1920, The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) has been the nation's pre-eminent membership-based organization dedicated to ensuring that disadvantaged and vulnerable children are protected from harm and have the tools and resources they need to grow into the healthy and happy adults we want them to become. CWLA is the trusted authority for professionals who work with children and the only national organization with public and private member agencies working across all sectors of the children's services field.
