February 24, 2009, Arlington, VA -- Chicago based U.S. Cellular has been named by the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) as its 2009 Corporate Advocate of the Year. U.S. Cellular is receiving the award for its commitment to increasing visibility and support for programs serving at-risk youth. The company was nominated by Uhlich Children's Advantage Network (UCAN) of Chicago, IL.

In 2003, U.S. Cellular chose UCAN as a community partner and members of its senior leadership team became involved in organizing fundraisers, engaging volunteers and promoting the agency in the giving community. The personal commitment of U.S. Cellular's President & CEO John E. Rooney has led to the establishment of the John E. Rooney Dynamic Scholarship Endowment Fund which offers $5,000 to a UCAN youth who exemplifies strong leadership potential.

"We are proud to present this award to a corporation that has been unwavering in its commitment both personally and professionally to improving the lives of at-risk youth and others in their community," commented Christine James-Brown, CWLA President and CEO.

In 2008, U.S. Cellular donated more than $4 million and wireless service to nonprofits serving economically disadvantaged youth, families and seniors. With this support, hundreds of seniors were able to stay active and remain engaged in their communities; thousands of at-risk young people could take part in nurturing and enriching after-school programs; thousands of women and children had safe places to go to escape domestic violence; and families across the country had access to vital resources to help them become self-sufficient.

"At U.S. Cellular, we're not just in the business of connecting calls; we're in the business of connecting people. And we recognize that no one organization can do it alone --- it will take all of us. We believe that when you bring the right people together, great things can happen for our nation's youth. We look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of children and families through our partnerships with UCAN and other child welfare organizations" said Greg Hinton, Senior Director and Chief Diversity Strategist.

Based in Chicago, U.S. Cellular is the nation's 5th largest wireless provider.

The award will be presented to U.S. Cellular at CWLA's Annual Leadership Awards Dinner, February 24, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC.

The criteria used by CWLA in the selection of the awardees include: personnel and management policies that promote the well-being of its employees; giving and philanthropic activities that benefit children, youth, and families. In addition, their corporate products are not harmful to children and families or their physical and cultural environment; and have a sustained pattern of national, state, or local activities that benefit children, families, and the community.
