August 26, 2009, Arlington, VA -- CWLA joins the world in mourning the loss of one of our nation's great leaders and great champions for America's children and families, Senator Edward M. Kennedy. The impact that Senator Kennedy had on this nation will be measured for decades to come. While history will tell us that his career spanned nearly half a century, ten presidents, and two dozen congresses, the true measure of his value cannot be counted in time.
He was a powerful advocate on his most important and most personal issue of improving and increasing access to health care for all Americans. He was at the forefront of the enactment of CHIP, COBRA, mental health and addiction parity, the Ryan White Act, and health insurance portability. Senator Kennedy was a pivotal force in issues that have shaped and will continue to shape the lives of every family, including education reform, Head Start, minimum wage increases, national service, stronger civil rights laws, and better child care. His legacy will be felt for generations, as children grow up and families benefit from the policies and laws he helped put in place. We know that Senator Kennedy dedicated his life to making children and families a national priority, and for that, we are thankful.
CWLA expresses condolences to his family, his friends, and his colleagues. Because of Senator Kennedy's work, we know "the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
Since 1920, CWLA has been the nation's preeminent membership-based organization dedicated to ensuring that disadvantaged and vulnerable children are protected from harm and have the tools and resources they need to grow into healthy and happy adults. CWLA is the trusted authority for professionals who work with children and the only national organization with public and private member agencies working across all sectors of the children's services field.
