After 15 rounds of voting, Kevin McCarthy has secured enough votes to become the 53rd Speaker of the House of Representatives. Since 2006, Speaker McCarthy has served California’s 23rd district in Congress. After he was elected to Congress, Speaker McCarthy became Chief Deputy Whip and later served as Majority Whip. In 2014, he was elected Republican Leader in the House.

Now that the Republican Caucus has elected Speaker McCarthy, the business of the Congress and the nation can now commence. This includes the swearing-in of the 118th Congress, which took place following Speaker McCarthy’s election on Friday, January 6th, 2023, and assigning Republican members to committee assignments.

CWLA is proud of its 100-year record of working in a bipartisan manner. Children and families in need depend on CWLA and our coalition partners to always place their needs first, this must remain our priority and it will. CWLA will soon release its 118th Congressional Legislative Agenda – this agenda was developed without any consideration of the makeup of Congress; rather it was developed to prioritize legislation that must be enacted to help vulnerable children and their families.

As we congratulate Speaker McCarthy, and all members of the 118th Congress on their election, we remain committed to working with members of this Congress to ensure protections for children remain a priority.
